About this book
The preface describes a collection drawn from various sources, brought together in a readable and condensed form without any claim to originality. The book presents popular customs as illustrations of social and domestic manners, arranging its material according to the calendar of the year. The account of families near Leeds describes former gatherings of relations, friends, and neighbours for card-playing and a supper in which mince pies were indispensable.
The description of the wassail-bowl names ale, sugar, nutmeg, and roasted apples as its ingredients, usually called lambs’ wool. The account identifies the maypole of Lostock, near Bolton in Lancashire, as probably the most ancient on record.
