About this book
The Book of Fables and Folk Stories is a book by Horace Elisha Scudder. The contents list names Little Red-Riding-Hood, The Goose That Laid Golden Eggs, The Dog in the Manger and The Fox and the Grapes, among others. In The Fox and the Grapes, a hungry Fox found some bunches of grapes upon a vine high up a tree, tried to get at them but could not, and went off saying to himself that they are sour grapes. A remark after the fable says that people sometimes, when they cannot get what they want, make believe that what they want is good for nothing.
In the story of Little One Eye, Little Two Eyes, and Little Three Eyes, a woman has three daughters, and the eldest is called Little One Eye because she has only one eye in the middle of her forehead. Little Two Eyes is so called because she has two eyes like other people, and her sisters and her mother cannot bear her.
