About this book

Charles Fort opens with a procession of "the damned", by which he means facts that orthodox science has shut out rather than explained. Across the chapters he gathers reports from journals and newspapers of his time: strange falls from the sky, odd weather, and lettered stones and markings found in rock and earth.

Fort writes in an argumentative, teasing voice. He insists that the lines between accepted and rejected data are arbitrary, comparing them to red shading into yellow through orange, and he seldom commits to one tidy explanation, preferring to let the evidence pile up and let the reader squirm.

Published in 1919, the book is filed under meteorology and astronomy. Readers pick it up today for its odd collection of historical curiosities and for its stubborn questioning of scientific certainty.
