About this book
The Bounty of the Chesapeake takes up Fishing in Colonial Virginia. The text describes rosy pictures painted of marine life, stressing the abundance, variety and tastiness of the fish and shellfish. The text says the first colonists had no ice at all and very little salt, and that frequent spells of damp weather made sun-drying impractical.
One account says the abundance of oysters is incredible, with whole banks of them so that the ships must avoid them. The text says the waters and especially the tributaries are filled with turtles. The text says a few Nantucket seamen had even transferred to Nova Scotia in order to become British citizens again and thus receive exemption from whale-oil import duty.
