About this book
The Boy Pilot of the Lakes, or Nat Morton's Perils, is a book by Frank V. Webster. Nat says he may make a dollar if he is lucky, and a young man says he will give him more than that for saving his boat, producing five dollars in a bank bill. Someone coming over to where Nat stood at the wheel asks how he would like to come with him on a big passenger steamer, and the talk turns to a chance to learn to be a pilot.
A man calling himself Captain Carter, of the Liberty Bell, says his bows are stove in and one of his men is injured, and Mr. Weatherby shouts back that it was his steersman's fault. Nat passes an uneasy night, knowing the fault of the collision was not his but worrying that he might not be able to prove it.
