Bud asks "Did you see me?" and Mr. Merkel answers with a half smile, "I saw you risk your neck, if that's what you mean." Bud says they are all going to do stunts over at the Palmo rodeo, and that he made up fence jumping so Dick and Nort and he could horn in on some of the prizes.
Mr. Merkel says he has got a new job for the boys, and that if they take it on, which he hopes they will, they won't have any time for a rodeo. The text says an old man ran back into the darkness of the far reaches of a cavern and disappeared from view. Dick says of the old man that he was brewing stuff to poison their cattle, and that he is the fellow that's been doing it.
