About this book

The four younger Rovers, Jack, Fred, Andy and Randy, are cadets at Colby Hall when this story opens, and the first scene is a snowball contest to see who can clear the roof of the school barn. Their fathers were the Rover boys of the earlier series, and this sixth volume of the second series keeps the same quick, joking talk among schoolmates.

The first half stays at school, with a sleigh-ride party, a shooting contest, the election of cadet officers, a parade past the girls of Clearwater Hall and a baseball game, while a small mystery around their friend Spouter Powell builds in the background. Then the boys head west to a cattle ranch, where chapters bring horses, a cattle stampede, a mountain lion and a cave.

Edward Stratemeyer wrote it in 1922 under the name Arthur M. Winfield. It is light adventure for young readers, and a clear picture of the boys' series fiction of that decade.
