About this book

Stories of earlier settlement make the West seem full of possibilities to Charlie and Sandy Howell and their cousin Oscar Bryant. Raised in Dixon, Illinois, the three boys hear accounts of the Rock River country and imagine adventures of their own. Charlie's father, whose transportation business has been displaced by the railroads, considers moving farther west. Noah Brooks places these hopes against the dispute over whether slavery will be allowed in Kansas Territory, where arrivals from different states seek to influence the outcome.

The practical work of making a home receives close attention. In the Kansas cabin-building scenes, the boys learn how notched logs fit together, how split wooden shakes form a roof, and how clay closes gaps in the walls. Even the rattling floor becomes a lesson in green timber and scarce supplies. This children's frontier novel combines youthful curiosity with descriptions of tools and shelter, offering a concrete picture of daily settlement alongside the political pressures surrounding it.
