About this book

One of the earliest American novels built around baseball, this 1884 story for young readers follows a small-town amateur nine as they organize, train, and set their sights on a championship. Brooks captures the game in the years when it was becoming the national pastime, with its local rivalries, hard-fought matches, and the pride a town invests in its club. Written for boys but grounded in the real texture of nineteenth-century amateur ball, it is as much a portrait of period American life as a sports tale, and it holds a modest but genuine place in the early history of baseball fiction. This free PDF and EPUB edition brings an early example of the genre back to readers.
