About this book
A theatre visit in Moscow turns an evening's entertainment into a lesson in architecture, manners and Russian history. Thomas Wallace Knox's illustrated travel story follows Frank Bassett and Fred Bronson with their mentor, Dr. Bronson, through cities and along rivers of the Russian Empire. Their route takes in St. Petersburg, Moscow and the great fair at Nijni Novgorod before continuing down the Volga. Alongside these travels, the book discusses education, shopping, winter transport and the lives of exiles.
The account of the Moscow Opera-house gives a clear sense of the writer's interests. Seats are described as separate armchairs, while rooms behind the boxes allow spectators to receive visitors between acts. The stage and ceiling are compared with those of theatres in Milan, Naples and London. A painted curtain brings historical figures and traditional clothing into the discussion. Published in 1887 for young readers, the book offers a way to explore how travel fiction combined everyday observations with geography and history.
