About this book
The Brass Bell, Or, The Chariot of Death, is by Eugène Sue and is called A Tale of Caesar's Gallic Invasion on its title page. The preface says the story is the second of a monumental serial known under the collective title of The Mysteries of the People.
The preface calls the present story the thrilling introduction to the class struggle. A scene has Albinik cry out for holy liberty while a conflagration devours all the houses, all the villages, all the hamlets, all the towns in the laps of all those valleys. The text says all this territory had been burned by its inhabitants, who abandoned the smoking ruins to join the Gallic army. A speaker says the whole army was driven back in disorder upon the reserve, where were also the war-chariots, the wounded, the women and the children.
