About this book

The Abbatial Crosier, or Bonaik and Septimine, is subtitled a tale of a medieval abbess. Abd-el-Kader enters a chamber and says: Rosen-Aër, we meet to-day for the last time, perhaps. The woman replies that she will never forget that six years ago, when the Arabians invaded Burgundy and raided the valley of Charolles, where her family lived in happiness for more than a century.

In a scene at a convent, a speaker warns that the abbess of this convent and her nuns will be treated like women of conquered towns, and a voice answers that Dame Meroflede, the holy abbess, minds not such threats. The abbess consents to admit the chief of those bandits, but alone, into the convent. Amael covers his face with his hands and answers only with a smothered sob, and Septimine says to Rosen-Aër: do not overwhelm him, see how wretched he feels, how contrite he is.
