About this book
Behind the gardens and wooded grounds of Cherbury, Lady Annabel Herbert has made a secluded home for herself and her young daughter. Wealth and family rank have not kept her from withdrawing from relatives and society. Venetia grows up within this small household, learning from her mother and enjoying the countryside, while the reasons for their isolation remain uncertain. Benjamin Disraeli's novel, first published in 1837, begins with this contrast between a child's happiness and a parent's hidden sorrow.
The later excerpt takes mother and daughter to London, where the crowded streets excite Venetia and stir painful memories for Lady Annabel. An approaching visit from her brother brings their long separation into focus. Readers interested in domestic fiction and romance will find detailed settings, conversations about goodness and happiness, and a young woman's first encounters with a family circle she has barely known.
