About this book
The British Navy Book is credited to Lieut.-Col. and Brevet Col. Cyril Field. The contents list names, among others, a prologue titled The Command of the Sea. The text says that from Cæsar's De Bello Gallico we learn that in his time the Ancient Britons made use of boats with a wooden frame, supporting wicker-work instead of planking, and rendered watertight by a covering of skins.
The text describes a "King Edward" class of five ships, dating from 1902-3, as very similar to their predecessors but with over 1000 tons more displacement. The text says the naval airmen made up their minds to go and see for themselves, and that their visit to Friedrichshafen, something like 150 miles from the French frontier, was entirely unexpected.
