About this book
Sea Life in Nelson’s Time is by John Masefield, with sixteen illustrations. A chapter headed Sea punishments lists, among others, the cat, flogging at the gangway, running the gauntlet, keel-hauling and hanging. The text says the punishment most in use in the fleet was flogging on the bare back with the cat-o’-nine-tails. The text says the thieves’ cat, with which thieves were flogged, had longer and heavier tails, knotted throughout their length.
The text says a man caught thieving was generally set to run the gauntlet. The text says the musket was the weapon of the marines, a flint-lock, muzzle-loading, smooth-bore, firing a ball of from 1 to 2 ounces, with a charge of 4½ drachms of powder. The text says it was the general custom to mess the men “six upon four,” an arrangement by which six men received, and lived upon, the allowance of four men.
