The Bronze Age in Ireland

The Bronze Age in Ireland, by George Coffey, names its author as a member of the Royal Irish Academy and keeper of Irish antiquities in the National Museum. The preface says its writer has collected and collated all his work on the period in this book on the Bronze Age in Ireland, and that much of it was already published in the "Proceedings of the Royal Irish Academy" and elsewhere. The contents list includes, among others, entries on bronze trumpets and sickles, on bronze-age pottery with food-vessels, cinerary urns and incense cups, and on bronze-age ornamentation in Ireland, including the ornamentation at New Grange.

The list of illustrations names, among others, copper celts from Cappeen, Co. Cork, a stone mould for casting celts, and halbert blades. The text describes a dagger discovered in 1897 at an interment at Topped Mountain Cairn, County Fermanagh, which measures 5⅝ inches and is covered with a beautiful blue patina. A list of entries with page numbers includes, among others, Belturbet, where bronze spear-heads were found, and Birr, King’s Co., where celts were found.
