About this book
The Viceroys of Ireland is a book by Charles Kingston. The title page describes the book as the story of the long line of noblemen and their wives who have ruled Ireland and Irish society for over seven hundred years. The preface says the book is the first complete history of the viceroys of Ireland, and that the late Sir John T. Gilbert's book, published in 1864, dealt with the viceroys between 1172 and 1509 only.
The text says Sunday, October 14, 1318, witnessed the last of Edward Bruce and his pretensions to the kingdom of Ireland. The text notes that in 1320 a university was opened in Dublin, but it was never more than a seminary for ecclesiastics. The text says the Order of St. Patrick was founded in the early months of 1783, the viceroy installing himself as grand master. The text says Mr. Gordon had just become engaged to Miss Violet Asquith, the daughter of the Prime Minister.
