About this book
The Brownings, Their Life and Art discusses the formative influence of books on Robert Browning’s life and poetry, particularly during his boyhood. The elder Browning’s love of books is illustrated by his ability to select a particular volume from hundreds in his library, even in the dark. The elder Browning frequented old book-stalls in London, and the account says his knowledge of their contents exceeded that of their owners.
A gathering in a lofty Roman drawing-room includes lighted swinging lamps, an open grand piano, music, tables piled with books and flowers everywhere. The hostess reads aloud from poems of Mr. Browning, and the poet enters while the reading is still under way.
