About this book

Western skies and the railways beneath them give Lilian Whiting's travel writing its starting point. Published in 1906, the book covers Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Southern California, connecting landscape descriptions with the means of reaching them. The opening considers the route between Colorado Springs and Cripple Creek, the ascent around St. Peter's Dome and the Petrified Forests. Poetry and religious language help convey Whiting's response to the mountains, desert and changing light.

Her account of Colorado also looks at the life developing among those surroundings. Agriculture and commerce share attention with mining, while schools, libraries, women's clubs and local writers feature in her hopes for the state's future. Whiting links the appearance of the landscape to the intellectual and moral growth of its communities. For readers today, these pages reveal how a traveller at the start of the twentieth century understood scenery, industry and cultural progress together.
