About this book
In the fishing village of Northbourne, Captain Carnegy's household is harder to manage than any crew he commanded at sea. His sons Geoff and Alick resist their lessons, while the captain devotes himself to compiling a history of naval engagements. Across the bay, the vicarage provides another centre of village life, complete with two troublesome terriers and Binks, a gardener whose blunt advice challenges Alick's view of his tutor.
The family's difficulties give this children's novel its Christian lessons about duty, sympathy and making amends. Theo tries to draw her father into the children's pleasures, while Alick's promise to visit the woods with a bird-trainer clashes with a tempting invitation to the vicarage museum.
