About this book
The Case and Exceptions: Stories of Counsel and Clients is a book by Frederick Trevor Hill. The contents list names, among others, "Outside the Record", "In the Matter of Bateman" and "The Finding of Fact". The piece headed "Outside the Record" is written from a court room on June 5, 1896, is addressed to Dorothy, and says Warren's fate is in the hands of the jury.
The narrator says Warren staggered into the narrator's rooms and would hear of no other counsel. Warren tells the narrator, "You know the facts and believe in me," and "I would rather die than be imprisoned." A scene names Martin and Judge Blagden and says Martin felt "the old feeling of bitterness" when business threatened to bring him into Blagden's Court, and thereafter appeared before Judge Blagden "by proxy only". Bill Nevins enters with a "Howdy!" and says, "Cold morning, boys!"
