About this book

An afternoon ride near the Mediterranean brings Virginia Beverly to an olive valley and a partly ruined château offered for sale. Marchese Loria's uneasiness sharpens her interest: he tries to draw the party away, then admits that a great personal sorrow belongs to the place. The contrast between bright coastal sunshine and the valley's deepening shadows gives this mystery novel its first source of suspense.

A. M. Williamson joins that opening puzzle to an adventure involving distant travel and guarded access. Virginia, Sir Roger Broom and George Trent seek official permission to enter the prison in New Caledonia, carefully concealing their anxiety behind a prepared account of a publishing project. Readers who enjoy secretive companions, bold plans and conversations with something at stake will find those elements alongside vivid descriptions of landscapes and public offices.

About the author

A. M. Williamson

Charles Norris Williamson (1859-1920) and his wife Alice Muriel Williamson (1869-1933) were a British writing team who published together as "C. N. and A. M. Williamson." They were among the most popular Edwardian authors of the "motoring novel," light romantic adventures that followed young travelers on car and boat tours through Europe.
