About this book
An invitation from an elderly stranger draws a writer into a house on a damp evening in Bath. Behind its neglected exterior, he finds a richly furnished room, a gracious hostess and a request that has yet to be explained. Henry Curties opens this mystery novel with close attention to appearances: dirty windows and dark passages give way to fine candles, silver and art, while the narrator weighs caution against his instinct to trust.
The story later moves into swift physical danger, with masked riders, armed pursuit and the narrator's effort to free Dolores from her captors. Told in the first person, it combines the uncertainty of an unexplained encounter with the pace of an adventure tale. Readers interested in older suspense fiction will find both a carefully staged opening in Somerset and a later passage built around disguise, quick decisions and escape on horseback.
