About this book

The Cat is by Violet Hunt and carries the heading Animal Autobiographies. The preface says that a cat is of all animals the most difficult to know, so intimate but so detached, so dependent on human beings for its comfort and so loftily indifferent to their wishes. The preface names Loki and says Loki is a real cat in more senses than one.

The narrator says that, until the eyes opened, the number of brothers and sisters was unknown, except for mother's telling. Rosamond, who calls herself cat-maid, jumps up one day and screams to Auntie May that one of them has got a tiny, tiny slit where his eyes ought to be. The narrator plays a game with a mouse, tossing it up and down two or three times in the air, and believes it was dead, really and truly, not pretending. A vet is reported as saying that the poor little thing was dying of pleurisy, and a speaker says that if the speaker's maid had lost an only child she could not have felt it more, after having nursed that cat night and day.
