About this book

Four-year-old Baby wants to climb the stairs and open doors for himself, even when the handles are beyond his reach. In Mrs. Molesworth's children's novel, his solemn efforts to understand the world bring small household events into close focus. His nurse Lisa calls him Herr Baby, and his older siblings supply both company and teasing. An escaped dormouse turns the nursery into a scramble, while news of a sea crossing sets him wondering how a boat could hold everyone he knows.

Travel gives these familiar worries a new setting. At a hotel before the crossing, Baby misses his bed, the animals and the servants at home, while the older children enjoy unfamiliar rooms. His questions about the moon and his claim to have stayed awake until twenty o'clock make the story especially suited to readers who enjoy childhood speech, family comedy and everyday adventures seen through a small child's eyes.
