About this book
The Ceramic Art is subtitled A Compendium of the History and Manufacture of Pottery and Porcelain, and the title page announces 464 illustrations. In her preface Jennie J. Young says she aims to answer, as tersely and lucidly as possible, the more important questions about the history and making of pottery and porcelain, and to bring recent research to bear on unsolved problems.
One passage says that the nations whose early religious ideas are known all ascribe the beginning of work in clay to their gods, and it quotes Jacquemart. Another discusses pottery made under Mussulman and Persian traditions, and African pottery whose place of manufacture is unknown. A passage on kaolin in the United States cites the report of M. Ch. de Bussy, a French member of the International Jury at the Centennial Exhibition. The book appeared in New York in 1878.
