About this book
This is Henri Van Laun's English rendering of the "Characters" of Jean de La Bruyère, with an introduction, a biographical memoir and notes, and twenty-four etchings by B. Damman and V. Foulquier. A transcriber's note explains that the chapters were renumbered because the original skipped a number, and one chapter is titled "Of Fashion".
The text is a run of numbered reflections. In the pages sampled, one compares the change in style with architecture: writers gave up the Gothic manner and brought back the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders; in writing, he says, perfection and, if possible, surpassing the ancients come only by imitating them. Another remarks that the most unnatural sight in the world is an old man in love. A third says hatred can be so lasting that a reconciliation on a sick-bed foretells death. The notes mention Louis XIV, Versailles and Madame de Maintenon.
