About this book
The volume contains an introduction and notes, with the preface explaining that some introductory material and many notes were taken from an earlier selection. The introduction says that De Quincey seems to have believed he was creating a new literary type of prose poetry or prose phantasy. The introduction attributes much of De Quincey's style to seventeenth-century writers, including Milton and Sir Thomas Browne. The introduction places De Quincey among writers who revived interest in earlier modern English prose and calls prose poetry a very small portion of his work.
The narrator says that, so far as he knows, every element in the Dream's shifting movements came from the actual scene or secondary features associated with the mail.
