About this book

A gossip who supplies his own news and a host who counts every glass of wine turn human weaknesses into scenes of daily life. Theophrastus builds these brief character sketches around recognizable habits, from boastfulness and flattery to suspicion and excessive thrift. The newsmonger invokes elusive witnesses to lend weight to his reports, while the mean man searches his furniture and floorboards for a small lost coin. Their actions make abstract faults visible in conversation and household business.

This 1902 English translation by Charles E. Bennett and William A. Hammond includes an introduction comparing ancient Greek manners with later social behavior. The sketches offer a way to study how a few details can establish a personality. Banquets, markets and encounters between acquaintances provide the setting, giving readers interested in character writing or moral observation short pieces to consider one at a time.
