About this book
The Charm of Ireland by Burton Egbert Stevenson includes many illustrations drawn from photographs taken by the author. The description of St. Mary's Abbey, Howth, identifies the west front as part of the original Danish church built in 1042 and describes its small round-headed doorway. The church account describes a nave and one aisle separated by three pointed arches, followed two centuries later by an extension with three more arches.
The travel account describes an evening train journey westward from Athlone, a sunset watched for hours, and the appearance of Galway Bay as darkness came. The account of a burial chamber describes a narrow stone passage requiring bent or sideways movement, leading to a central chamber about ten feet square.
