About this book
The Aran Islands by J. M. Synge has an introduction saying there are three islands: Aranmor, the north island, Inishmaan, the middle island, and the south island, Inishere. The introduction says the islands lie about thirty miles from Galway, up the centre of the bay. An old man comes to see the writer and says he has come back to live in a bit of a house with his sister, and that the island is not the same at all to what it was.
The writer says he has decided to move on to Inishmaan, where Gaelic is more generally used, and the life is perhaps the most primitive that is left in Europe. In the boys' school, where the writer sometimes looks in, the children surprise him by their knowledge of English, though they always speak in Irish among themselves. The writer clambers down hastily and finds, to his amazement, a worn golf-ball.
