The Chemistry of the Secondary Batteries of Plante and Faure is a scientific monograph by John Hall Gladstone (1827-1902), the English chemist and Fellow of the Royal Society who served as Fullerian Professor of Chemistry at the Royal Institution and was a long-serving member of the London School Board. Gladstone worked in optics, spectroscopy, and the chemistry of metals, and was an early student of electrochemistry. This book treats the lead-acid rechargeable battery, then a recent invention developed by Gaston Planté in 1859 and improved by Camille Alphonse Faure in 1881, which was beginning to find practical use in early electric lighting and in the first electric vehicles.
