Gladstone worked in optics, spectroscopy, and the chemistry of metals, and was an early student of electrochemistry. This book treats the lead-acid rechargeable battery, then a recent invention developed by Gaston Planté in 1859 and improved by Camille Alphonse Faure in 1881, which was beginning to find practical use in early electric lighting and in the first electric vehicles.
