John Hall Gladstone
John Hall Gladstone combined chemistry, education, and science administration whose publications ranged from electrochemistry to classroom reform. Spelling Reform presents his educational argument for making English orthography easier to teach and learn. The Chemistry of the Secondary Batteries of Plante and Faure, written with chemist Alfred Tribe, examines the reactions underlying early rechargeable lead batteries and reflects the collaborators’ experimental work on electrochemical processes. Bibliographic records consistently credit both Gladstone and Tribe for the battery study, while author catalogues distinguish Gladstone’s education lectures from his chemical research. This breadth was characteristic of a scientist involved in public institutions as well as laboratory inquiry. He also wrote about Michael Faraday and object teaching, connecting scientific knowledge with questions of instruction. Taken together, Spelling Reform and The Chemistry of the Secondary Batteries of Plante and Faure show two sides of Gladstone’s career: a concern with how knowledge is communicated and a close investigation of how emerging electrical technologies actually functioned.
