About this book
A Treatise on Simple Counterpoint in Forty Lessons is by Friedrich J. Lehmann. The preface says "The purpose of this work is to supply the need in the Oberlin Conservatory of Music of a text-book on Simple Counterpoint containing a definite assignment of lessons". The preface calls the work "a treatise on strict counterpoint, but strict in a limited sense only".
A list of lessons includes "LESSON IX. Fifth Species: Florid Counterpoint. Examples and Exercises." and "SIMPLE COUNTERPOINT IN THREE PARTS". The text says "The leading-tone may be doubled as in Fig. 74." Under "LESSON XXXIV FREE HARMONIZATION IN THREE-PART COUNTERPOINT" the text advises "When writing in three or more parts, it is well to let a part rest occasionally, and, when it reënters, have it imitate one of the other parts."
