About this book
On a moonlit path through the Vosges, Ulrich Biehler breathes in the forest air before going to meet his nephew Jean. His attachment to the mountains of Alsace sits beside a lasting loyalty to France, despite living under German rule. René Bazin places this divided allegiance within a family whose different loyalties strain the bonds between parents, children and siblings.
Landscape carries much of the novel's feeling. Forest scents, rising mist and the bells heard from Sainte Odile give the setting a presence as strong as the family disputes. There, Jean Oberlé and Odile Bastian share an affection shadowed by uncertainty, while a gathering of Alsatians finds comfort in familiar speech and local customs. Readers interested in historical fiction about belonging will find a story in which love of home, national identity and private relationships press closely upon one another.
