About this book
Ruth Royce is the author of The Children of France, which the opening describes as "A Book of Stories of the Heroism and Self-sacrifice of Youthful Patriots of France During the Great War". The contents list, among others, chapters named "REMI THE BRAVE", "THE HEROINE OF FORT MONTERE" and "MARIE THE COURAGEOUS". In an author's note the writer says she "cannot personally vouch for the stories related in this volume" but "has full confidence in the sources of her information".
The Captain says a real soldier never brags about himself and asks how Master Joseph would like to be told about the brave little children of France. One story is about Remi, a little French peasant lad who had just passed his tenth birthday when the Germans invaded his beloved country. Marie told the captain all that she had learned, interrupted frequently by exclamations of approval from the officer at the other end.
