About this book

A cow's sale changes the daily life of a young foundling in the French village of Chavanon. Remi remembers Mother Barberin's care, from warming his feet to protecting him from rain. News of her husband's accident in Paris brings demands for money, and the household must part with the animal that provides both food and companionship. Hector Malot begins this children's novel with the small comforts and sudden pressures of a poor rural home.

The wider adventure takes the boy onto roads where endurance and trust matter. In one passage, Remi and Vitalis struggle through bitter wind near Paris, searching for shelter as their strength fails. The first-person account brings practical hardships close: a meal, a familiar voice, or a hand to hold can carry great weight. Readers interested in childhood, friendship, and nineteenth-century France will find those concerns woven into the story's movement between village life and the road.

About the author

Hector Malot
