The Children's Book of Celebrated Pictures is by Lorinda Munson Bryant, whose title page also names Famous Pictures of Real Boys and Girls and Famous Pictures of Real Animals. It is dedicated to her daughter Bertha Cookingham Bryant. A numbered list of illustrations gives fifty pictures with their painters and the galleries where they hang, including The Blue Boy by Gainsborough, King Lear by Abbey and Sunset in the Woods by Inness.
A letter addressed to Dear Children says the stories about the pictures and their painters are gathered from many countries, and that to understand pictures we must know what the artists had in mind. The chapter titled The Holy Family explains who belongs to the Holy Family. A passage on Maes's The Spinner says the picture is sixteen and one fourth inches high and thirteen inches wide. The book also has an index of painters and subjects.
