About this book

Smaly and his wife Redy set out to find three little girls and enter a country where ordinary things behave in extraordinary ways. Their noses become beaks, horses are made of sugar, sponges walk, and a confectioner resembles a kangaroo. The inhabitants called Wigs wear enormous perukes, while flying fish serve as household pets. Jean de Boschère builds this children’s fantasy through a succession of odd encounters, with illustrations by the author and an English retelling by F. Tennyson Jesse.

A visit to the Historian’s house reveals the book’s comic logic in detail. Its ceiling has separate openings for two flying fish, and painted figures compare countries by their yearly consumption of cake and pudding.
