About this book
Whiskers in the soup are enough to send Bunyip Bluegum out of his tree house and onto the road. His uncle refuses to trim them, and a poet helps Bunyip solve the practical problem of travelling without luggage. Hunger soon brings him to Bill Barnacle, a sailor, and Sam Sawnoff, a penguin. Their lunch introduces Albert, a talking pudding whose slices keep replacing themselves and whose temper makes every meal an argument.
Published in 1918, Norman Lindsay's Australian children's fantasy mixes prose with comic verses, giving even complaints about manners and whiskers a rhyme. Suspicion of pudding thieves produces a ridiculous mistake involving Bunyip's uncle, his whiskers and a disputed nose. Animal characters, quarrels and physical comedy drive the action. Readers who enjoy nonsense stories will find a world where a plentiful lunch can create as much trouble as it solves.
