About this book

A bright red sleigh and a horse called Jeff are sources of pride for Vosh Stebbins, a country boy in snowy Benton Valley. While he thinks about showing city visitors what good sleighing means, Penelope Farnham waits impatiently for their arrival at a nearby farmhouse. Her eagerness leads to a burned waffle, while Aunt Judith fusses over the preparations and the warmth of the sitting room.

William O. Stoddard's children's novel joins the comforts of farmhouse life to outdoor adventures. In the middle excerpt, Vosh steers a loaded sled through gaps in fences and along a frozen stream to the millpond, earning the admiration of his passengers and the village. Dialogue gives the adults' anxious care and the young people's confidence much of their humor. Readers who enjoy winter sports and rural family stories will find both the pleasure of speed across snow and the welcome of a well-kept fire.
