About this book

Church bells and railway traffic mark two sides of life around the mountain village of Sabbath Valley. Fourteen-year-old Billy Gaston waits at Pleasant View station to earn money helping passengers with their luggage. After overhearing a suspicious telephone call, he follows the new freight agent into the trees and hears a plan to seize a wealthy motorist. Grace Livingston Hill sets this opening danger close to the village that commands Billy's affection and loyalty.

The story also turns to Marilyn, known as Lynn, who has returned home after four years at college. Her exchange with Opal brings questions of wealth, hospitality and personal standards into a domestic setting. Lynn judges a spoiled young visitor by his behaviour, while Opal stresses his family's money and standing. Published in 1922, this religious novel combines suspense with conversations about character and social influence. Readers can follow Billy's discoveries alongside the tension between village values and fashionable expectations.
