About this book
A night beside a forest railway places Guy Poynton in the path of a guarded meeting between two trains. The young English traveller watches men confer, then pockets a sheet of German writing that blows from a carriage window. Hunger and the practical troubles of travel occupy him as he heads for a village inn, giving the opening an easy comic tone alongside its secrecy.
E. Phillips Oppenheim builds this spy novel around information, appearances and the risks of misplaced trust. In another scene, Lord Runton recounts how guests accepted into his household received coded messages, and how an embassy messenger was found injured beside an opened despatch box after a letter was taken. Conversation carries much of the suspense, with polite manners masking uncertainty over identities and motives. Readers interested in early spy fiction will find a story that brings international intrigue into railway travel and country-house society.
