About this book

A sorrowful lover walks through a green meadow, prays for help and falls asleep. His dream carries him into a garden with golden turrets, fragrant plants and sweet springs, where a grave lady asks him to explain his distress. He tells her of a woman he has loved for years and of the books through which he has tried to express that love. Her advice joins patience and humility with concern for honour and peace.

Stephen Hawes builds this poem from rhyme, moral counsel and symbolic sights. A sword and shield possess special powers, while mirrors and a shining star invite interpretation. The opening discussion of poetry explains how invented stories can carry truths beneath their surface. Readers interested in older English verse will find distinctive spelling, courtly manners and a close connection between romantic feeling, religious trust and chivalric ideals.
