About this book
The coins of India considers what coins contribute to the question of the respective parts played by Greek and Indian ideals in shaping the character of Gandhāra sculpture. The account argues that the strongest influences of pure Greek art had passed away before the reign of Kanishka, judging from successive coinages. The descriptions include a coin of Vima Kadphises depicting a king seated cross-legged, wearing a crested helmet and diadem and holding a thunderbolt.
The account identifies the muhar as a standard gold coin weighing about 170 to 175 grains. The museum discussion records two five-muhar pieces in the British Museum, one of Akbar and one of Jahāngīr, both struck at the Āgra mint.
