About this book
The Colonial Clippers names Kent, Lightning, White Star and Malabar. The Sovereign of the Seas was nine days making the passage of the Horn, and arrived in San Francisco only 103 days out, a passage considered the best ever made at such an unfavourable season.
Log entries give the wind and distance, such as Wind South and Distance 342 miles, with a ship going 15 and occasionally 16 knots with main skysail and fore topmast studding sail set. The entries have the ship sight Kerguelen or Desolation Island, passing between Fortune Island and Round Island. A ship's runs home in the early nineties are listed as Lyttelton to London in 78 days in 1890, and Wellington to London in 82 days in 1891. The book describes the cry of Ice to leeward arising and a huge berg appearing out of the mist, with the ship weathering the new danger by a bare 100 yards.
