About this book
The Intelligent Woman’s Guide to Socialism and Capitalism is by Bernard Shaw and dates from 1928. The text asks whether the reader will try to make up their mind how they would like to see the income of their country divided-up day by day. The same passage warns against running to the Socialists or the Capitalists, or to a favorite newspaper, to make up one’s mind.
A passage says there is one reason left for maintaining a class of excessively rich people at the expense of the rest, and that business men consider it the strongest reason of all: it provides capital by giving some people more money than they can easily spend. The text adds that it is certainly necessary to high civilization that these savings should be made, but that it would be hard to imagine a more wasteful way of bringing it about. Another section says a lady, not understanding the business in the least, is tempted to send £10 and very likely loses it, though bucket shops must let their clients win sometimes or they could hardly exist.
