About this book

The Complete Opera Book is by Gustav Kobbe. This text was prepared from the 1919 first edition, and a transcriber's note says the book has been an important opera reference work since then.

The text is organised by opera. The entry for Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro follows Susanna, the Count, the Countess and Figaro and a letter duet, and recalls the old joke Mozart improved by Bishop. Don Giovanni is given as an opera in two acts with text by Lorenzo da Ponte and a list of productions with places and dates. Die Walküre is described as a music-drama in three acts by Richard Wagner, with its first New York performances and a cast list giving each voice type. In another passage Lionel protests that a woman took earnest money from him, and Lady Harriet says she has never laid eyes on him.
