About this book
At a crowded inn in Miltenberg, travellers bound for an imperial gathering in Cologne mingle with officials, merchants and itinerant performers. In the opening tale, "In the Blue Pike," the arrival of a Nuremberg councillor unsettles a group sheltering in the tavern. Kuni, a young woman with an injured leg, remembers how Lienhard Groland once spoke on her behalf before the magistrates. Her gratitude sits uneasily beside the suspicions and rough talk of her companions.
Georg Ebers gathers several shorter works here, including "A Question," "The Elixir," "The Greylock" and "The Nuts," in English translation. Another passage turns to Lysander’s household, where generosity to a strolling conjurer provokes the housekeeper Semestre and a prospective suitor becomes a subject of discussion. These scenes offer readers fiction concerned with compassion, status, family obligations and the judgments people make about one another.
