About this book
The Condition of Catholics Under James I presents Father Gerard's narrative of the Gunpowder Plot together with an account of his life, edited by John Morris. The contents list chapters about persecuted Catholics, disappointed hopes of relief at the King's entry, increased persecution, and gentlemen conspiring and deciding upon a violent remedy. The narrative says that a decision was made to acquaint the King before proceeding with any further inquiry into the matter.
A first-person account of missionary labours describes the Superior providing clothes and other necessities so that the narrator would not initially burden a charitable host. The account of missionary dress explains that clothing like that of gentlemen of moderate means allowed the narrator greater ease than assuming an unfamiliar character.
